WRITERS GUIDELINES

Pocket University is interested in finding only the best writers, whether scholars or journalists. Works of any length will be considered, but typically should run 8,000 to 20,000 words.

Only nonfiction works will be considered. Works must be written such that they will inform while holding the interest of a general audience. They should cover complex subjects while going into depth where required, without being obscure or arcane. The writing must be objective and balanced.

Examples of topics of interest in Science and Health include: Nanotechnology, Global Warming, DNA and Modern Genetics, How Computers Work, Human Evolution, Heart Disease, Smoking (the physiology and what it takes to quit), The Nature of the Universe, The Threat of Meteors, Cancer, Natural Disasters, How America Became Obese, Nutrition Supplements, Aids and HIV, Histories and Effectiveness of Meditation and Yoga, The Latest Findings in Child Development, How the Brain Works.

Examples of topics of interest in High and Popular Culture and Everyday Life include: Hip Hop, Country Music, Rock and Role, NASCAR Racing, Basic Understandings of the Games of Baseball, Football and Basketball, Fine Wines, Opera, Jazz, Elvis Presley, Running a Home-Based Business, Personal Finance, Getting Into College, Real Estate, Living Choices for the Elderly, Morality: 1905 till Now, Money Management.

Examples of topics of interest in History and Current Affairs include: What History Can Tell Us About Christ, The Greek Philosophers, China's Growing Economy, North Korea, Understanding Islam Today, Checks and Balances: How Our Government Works, The History of Democracy, Illegal Immigrants, Globalization, The Legacy of John Kennedy, The Role of Women In Islam, America in WWII: An Overview, Understanding Social Security and Medicare, American Jobs Going Overseas, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Abortion, The Gun Control Debate, The US Constitution: From Its Conception till Now, Subterfuge in Corporations, The Fall of Rome, Histories of the Major Religions of the World.

You may wish to send preliminary work (synopsis or outline) for an assessment of suitability. Or you can send finished manuscripts. Please include credentials and a list of previously published works, indicating when and where it was published. Please include a postcard or stamped self-return envelope.

Payment will vary and must be negotiated. Typical prices are in the $500 to $1000 range.
